This factory was originally the R. Ellwood Manufacturing Company built by Reuben Ellwood in Sycamore in 1876.
Reuben Ellwood's son Abram inherited the business upon his father's death in 1885. He renamed it the Abram Ellwood Manufacturing Company and relocated to DeKalb in 1892.
In 1894, the company employed some 250 workers and manufactured over 85,000 products.
Ellwood reorganized the company in 1896 and died shortly thereafter in 1897. The company dissolved in the early 1900's.
