American Steel and Wire Company

Established: 1898

Isaac L. Ellwood, John W. Gates and others established this manufacturing company, which took over Glidden and Ellwood (est. 1874) and the Superior Barbed Wire Company in 1898. The company absorbed DeKalb Fence Company a few years later around 1900.

The American Steel and Wire Company moved to Joliet and Waukegan in 1938.
